A rather stout perennial with single-flowered, terete scapes 10-30 cm high and 2-5 flat leaves growing from a bulb about 15 mm diam.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It grows in woods and damp meadows, abundantly at times, and is widespread over all lowland Britain.

Fleurs : jaune, grande, inodore, solitaire, penchée; spathe large, engainante ; périanthe en entonnoir, à tube obconique plus court que la couronne, à divisions oblongues, étalées ou ascendantes; couronne grande, en entonnoir, égalant les divisions, crénelée ou incisée-lobée ; étamines égales, droites, longues style long, mais plus court que la couronne
Floraison France : Mars-mai.
Flowers: 50-60 mm diam., solitary, nodding, subtended by a membranous, lanceolate, acute spathe; perianth segments pale yellow, about the same length as the tube, ovate, acute; corona deeper yellow, as long as of slightly shorter than the segments, rim irregularly toothed and scarcely spreading outwards.
Flowering UK: Late March-late April.
